Why get involved in the Fundraising Challenge for the Victoria WaterAid Ball 2022.

Right now, 771 million people globally lack access to clean water, 2 billion people do not have a decent toilet and millions do not have access to good hygiene.

WaterAid’s mission is to reach everyone, everywhere with clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene within a generation. Since 1981, WaterAid has reached over 27 million people with clean water and decent toilets (WaterAid, 2019). This vision inspires me, and I hope it inspires you too.

I personally find my time as a volunteer Chairing the Ambassadors Group extremely fulfilling 

 

Statistics can look stark:

  • 1 in 10 people on the planet don't have clean water close to home.
  • 578 million people have no choice but to drink dirty water. 
  • 2 million people in the world do not have a decent toilet of their own.

 

When people have access to clean water, a decent toilet and can practice good hygiene, they are less likely to become ill – with the current COVID-19 pandemic, this work has never been more urgent or more relevant.  I should also note that a decent toilet allows girls to stay at school after they commence menstruation – something we all take for granted as we push for a world with equality.

 

Due to the current COVID pandemic, WaterAid’s Melbourne Balls scheduled for 2020 and again in 2021 had to be cancelled.  These cancellations have had a huge impact on the work WaterAid are currently undertaking to help people access clean water, provide decent toilets and teach and encourage good hygiene.  With the current COVID-19 pandemic, this work has never been more urgent or more relevant.
