I'm taking a challenge for clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene!
Can you imagine life without direct access to clean water or toilets? Are we taking it’s abundance for granted?
More than 6% (82.8 million) of the Indian population lack access to safe water and about 15% (207 million) of India’s population practices open defecation.(UNICEF 2021).
Being brought up in an Indian village and having witnessed these issues firsthand, it isn’t hard to believe these statistics. With the little income that people make (43% of the total population lives on less than $3.20 per day), they do not have enough money for setting up a water connection or for constructing a basic toilet.
This has led to increased poverty, illness and gender inequality. Only Hygiene, Sanitation and Water interventions can help reduce these.
This December I will be running my first marathon (42.2km) at the Melbourne Marathon. With the urge to make a difference, I’ve decided to spread awareness and fund raise for WaterAid Australia. WaterAid helps facilitate clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene interventions to affected parts of India and to other parts of the world.
