Clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene for everyone!
In 2021, when I was in Year 11, I fundraised for charity: water for my birthday.
At the time, I tried to raise as much as I could through school, work, family, and even some of my COVID and flood relief Centrelink stimulus payments. I was at Penrith High, working at Maccas Lidcombe, and I remember genuinely enjoying the process of asking people to donate, whether it was for school Valentine’s Day fundraisers or toy drives for kids in homeless shelters. It was something I loved doing with my mates at school, and it even carried into my first job after high school.
This cause is personal to me because I’m Nepalese. Growing up, my mum would show me videos of underprivileged kids whenever I didn’t finish my food. At the time, I probably didn’t fully understand it, but it stayed with me. Even now, you’ll rarely catch me throwing away a single crumb that lands on my plate.
Clean water is one of those basic things. It affects health, education, dignity, and the amount of time people have to actually live their lives instead of just surviving.
This WaterAid Australia page is also the tax-deductible option for Australian donors who would prefer that. Donations of $2 and above to the WaterAid Australia Overseas Aid Fund are tax deductible for Australian residents.
But tax deductibility is not the heart of this for me. It is just a practical option for people who want it.
I’m fundraising again because this is something I've just wanted to do. I’m not looking to raise as much money as possible but rather to focus on doing the deed itself. Something I’ve been learnt recently is to focus on blessing that it is to get to do this from a place of privilege, and not the prestige or the ego boost you get from it. So this is me trying to do the honest work.
