Water is life...

I've spent most of career around water infrastructure, but it took stepping back to remember something simple: water isn't just pipes and pump stations. It's the difference between a kid making it to school on time or spending her morning walking to fetch water for her family. It's the difference between a community thriving or being held back by something most of us never have to think about.

That's the world 696 million people still live in — almost one in ten of us, going without clean water close to home. In a lot of places, it's women and children who carry that burden, walking hours a day, every day, just for water that often isn't even safe to drink.

I'm Managing Director of Beck Water, and our water business works with councils and communities across Australia every day to build and maintain the infrastructure that gets clean water to people reliably. It's given me a front-row seat to just how much planning, investment and hard work goes into something most of us take for granted every time we turn on a tap. That's exactly why WaterAid's mission means something to me — they're doing, in some of the hardest places in the world, the same work I get to do here: making sure water reaches the people who need it.

So this October, I'm taking part in WaterAid's Walk For Water — walking, running and riding for five days alongside my team, the Beck Walkers, to help raise funds so more communities can get clean water for the first time.

It's a small commitment on my part — some early mornings, some sore legs — set against what it could mean for a family on the other side of that $50, $100 or $500 donation. WaterAid estimates just $50 can help provide a community with the tools to build a clean water system. That's the kind of leverage that's hard to say no to.

Why I'm walking, running & riding for water this October!

696 million people in the world – almost one in ten – do not have clean water close to home. Every day, women and children walk long distances to collect and carry water for their families. Girls and boys often begin collecting water as children and girls continue to collect and carry water throughout their lives. Many girls spend hours each day collecting water, which can cause them to miss time at school. And not only that, sometimes the water they are forced to collect is dirty, carrying water borne diseases and leading to sickness in their community.

This is why we need your help – we are asking you to walk for water, so that they don’t have to.

By walking, running or riding for five days, you can raise awareness and funds so people around the world can access clean water for the first time.
