Why SMEC Brisbane is walking, running & riding for water this October.
696 million people in the world – almost one in ten – do not have access to clean water close to home. Every day, women and children walk long distances to collect and carry water for their families, sometimes being causing them to miss time at school. Sometimes, they are forced to collect and use water that is dirty, putting their communities at risk of sickness from water-borne diseases.
To raise awareness and funds for WaterAid, the SMEC Brisbane team will be joining a 45-minute walk to and from Wilson Outlook Reserve in support of WaterAid's Walk for Water in 2026. The walk will serve as a reminder of the conditions millions of people live in everyday, and represent a small fraction of the distances they have to walk on a daily basis to have access to clean water.
We are asking for others to join us in supporting this year's initiative by spreading the word and walking for water, so others don't have to. Please consider donating to our fundraising page to contribute to WaterAid's amazing work in providing clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene for everyone. For just $50, WaterAid could buy water system tools to provide a rural community with clean water.
