There are two challenges on offer - please read up on both and you decide as team what you would like to take on.
Option 1 - Water Challenge
In Timor-Leste rainfall has become erratic, dry seasons are becoming longer, sea levels are rising, and rivers are drying up, making it harder and harder for people to feed their families. Weather fluctuations are resulting in crop damages or failures.
Sea level rise is threatening coastal areas, specifically Dili (the capital), which is only a few metres above sea level. Landslides and floods are damaging infrastructure and contaminating groundwater and surface water. Health and well-being are at risk.
Design a holistic approach to ensure that communities facing sea level rise and salination of groundwater, have access to year round water.

DownloadOption 2 - Hygiene and Sanitation Challenge
Safe, reliable water, adequate sanitation, waste systems and hygiene (WASH) services and behaviours in health care facilities are vital for safe, quality health care provision. WASH services in health care facilities are especially critical for the health of mothers and newborns to support quality, safe delivery and post-partum care.
In Timor-Leste WaterAid is supporting WASH in HCF in rural health posts and waste management is one of the poorest performing WASH areas. In Manufahi and Liquica WaterAid has found that health care waste management was poor at all health care facilities with fewer than one in ten health (9%) care facilities achieving basic service levels.
Design a solution to healthcare waste management challenges for rural healthcare facilities in Timor-Leste.
